Whose Cow is This?

Tera Hands, Choice Coordinator

One of the many skills students learn in the Biotechnology Academy at PBL is how to extract DNA from plants and animals. Putting this skill into practice, the level three and four Biotech students participated in a lab where they extracted the DNA from a cow’s heart.  They first had to blend the heart to work with it effectively. This activity is a good example of the hands-om nature of Biotechnology. Once the DNA was extracted, the students were able to study it and learn a lot about the cow–another whole and different lesson in and of itself.
