HOSA Competition and WINNERS!!!

Makayla Everett, Student Writer

Congratulations to the Medical Academy students who participated in this year’s district/regional HOSA competition, placed, and are now headed to the State Competition in Orlando! This competition prepares students to become future health professionals in the multiple categories in which they competed. The students prepared for this using time in class and at home studying, getting their minds ready for serious and stiff competition that they would encounter from other participants in the area.

Nadya Dormeille placed 1st in Clinical Nursing!!! Lakes had winners in Medical Assisting as well–1st place Nikaysia Mendez and 2nd place Janelle Thomas. Also, Brigette Ramos placed 2nd in Healthy Lifestyles, and Isabella Bayona placed 1st in Interviewing Skills. The HOSA Bowl (much like an Academic Bowl) gives students the opportunity to learn and show off their knowledge and skills in various health concepts and topics. Team Lakes Medical performed well overall in this competition–1st place, Alexie Cuaderno, Olivia Gayle, Rothana Jean, and Jadyn James! In addition, PBL’s academy students saw favorable results on the Health Care Issues Exam–Zavier Boldin won 1st place! Honorable Mention in the area of Physical Therapy went to Kally Sterling. What an AMAZING show of medical knowledge on the part of Lakes Medical!

Congratulations to those wonderful students for working hard and earning these accolades. Medical Academy instructor and HOSA sponsor, Mrs. McFarlane, had this to say: “I am very excited and proud of my students for their achievements. They have worked hard to advance in their competitive events.” The students who placed 1st, 2nd, or 3rd place in the previously mentioned categories will compete at the state level–The State Leadership Conference and Competition is April 9-12 in Orlando. Best wishes!
