Athlete of the Week…Auner Escobar
February 15, 2015
WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – There’s a big buzz in the local high school soccer scene about a player who only moved here from Mexico a year ago. Auner Escobar from Palm Beach Lakes High School is still learning the English language, but the international language of soccer has him excited about his future in the United States.
His game-winning penalty kick was one of two goals that earned Palm Beach Lakes a spot in this weekend’s state Final Four – the furthest the school has ever gotten.
And to Escobar soccer is a pathway to a bright future.
“You have way more opportunities than in other countries in the world,” says Escobar, translated from Spanish. “And here soccer can take you into the future.”
Escobar scored two goals in Lakes’s state semifinal 2-1 victory over Barron Collier, as the Rams continue to strive towards their first state title.
